About the Borgwarner Collection

BorgWarner's EFR (Engineered for Racing) turbocharger lineup is the current benchmark for street and track builds in the 400–900whp range. The EFR series was designed from the ground up as a complete integrated system — not assembled from sourced components — combining a ported-shroud compressor housing, dual ceramic ball bearings, and a Gamma-Ti turbine wheel in a package that delivers faster spool, higher peak efficiency, and longer service life than conventional aftermarket turbos at comparable frame sizes. It is not a rebadged OEM unit or a rehoused core. It is purpose-built for performance applications.

BorgWarner EFR Lineup for JDM Builds

  • EFR 7670 — 400–600whp range. The EFR's most versatile street size, widely used on 2JZ-GTE and FD3S single-turbo conversions. The ported shroud widens the usable compressor map; the IWG (internal wastegate) configuration keeps packaging compact in tight engine bays. One of the most recommended turbos for a street-driven FD3S or Supra targeting 500–600whp.
  • EFR 7980 — 500–700whp range. Larger frame for track-focused builds where top-end power matters more than low-RPM spool. Remains street-usable with proper manifold selection and boost control strategy.
  • EFR 8374 — 600–900whp range. For serious power applications on the 2JZ or RB26 with matching internals, fuel system, and ECU calibration. Steps into territory where most conventional turbos begin losing efficiency.
  • EFR 9180 — 700–1,000whp+ range. The flagship EFR for maximum-output builds. Requires a fully built engine and complete fuel system to utilize the full power ceiling.

Three Technologies That Separate EFR

Ported shroud compressor housing — exclusive to BorgWarner EFR, the ported shroud significantly widens the surge margin at partial throttle, giving the turbo a broader operating range without sacrificing peak efficiency. This is the single biggest functional advantage over conventional turbos at equivalent frame sizes.

Dual ceramic ball bearings — reduce oil demand and improve transient throttle response. Ceramic bearings require less oil pressure at idle and contribute to faster spool when boost is demanded from low RPM.

Gamma-Ti turbine wheel — titanium-aluminide alloy is 45% lighter than conventional nickel-alloy turbine wheels. Reduced rotational inertia improves spool characteristics at the turbine end of the assembly, compounding the bearing improvement on transient response.
